    Adventures in Hairstyling

I sometimes (see: often) have these quarterly year crises.  They involve me getting restless.  When I am restless I crave change.  When I crave change I sometimes (see: often) dramatically alter my physical appearance by changing my hair.  So, should one look at the date stamp of any photograph of me of any certain year, one will find upwards to four different hairstyles.  Four!  2000 boasted the best of black to red to burgundy to brown.  I was a blond in Japan, and a brunette in Japan.  And what my hairstylists dubbed my “sakura (cherry blossom)” phase in Japan.  4 colors all at once in Chicago; one at most in Florida.  All told, I am not immune to impulsivity.

Okay, so a proposed hair adventure is weak.  I understand this, except that it is always good to take routine, no matter how harried (hair-ied), and make it into something new.  So I did just that.  I scoured the streets of Boston for any salons willing to take me on as a test patient (aka: hair model), and in turn offered them this freedom: complete and total control.  Therein lies the caveat: I had, for the first time ever, absolutely no say in my own makeover.  I could not suggest.  I could not request.  I could not betray my opinion.  I was to remain stoic, impartial and ready to receive… anything. (More …)

I love it – almost every single picture of me shows a different style and/or color. I was everything you were regarding hair color. Thanks to radiation and a thinning of my hair on one side of my head – my cut will likely not stray absurdly far from what I have now, as it has done before. I think many people are afraid to change their hair in any way, so a “small” adventure to you is huge for them…

    A Quick and Dirty Catch-up…

8th Adventure – getting a haiku accepted into Sidelines, Simmons lit. magazine.  Not a big adventure, but nice to get a poem in the mag two years running (two last year, I’m slipping). 🙂

9th – Going to Boston Beerworks for the first time on 12 March.  I decided it was no longer fair that I wasn’t supposed to drink at all (thanks to issues from a brain tumor I didn’t ask for), and so after nearly 12 years of nothing more than a couple of  sips of alcohol, I drank two beers and a little vodka (over the course of the entire evening).  I’m not going to go crazy, of course, because that would be stupid, but I’m not always going to say no.  A defiant adventure, it was.  Although the Beerworks is nice, and it was a fun evening with friends.

10th – I joined Haiku a Day on Facebook, and will test my mettle with the poetry style I love writing. I reserve the right, however, to fall back on my older stash, and I firmly believe that haiku poems can be in two parts, like chapters. Themed haiku.

11th – Friday 19 March I tried JPLicks ice cream for the first time – kahlua.  Yummy, but definitely get a cup because it is drippy!

On the Barnes and Noble website,

under the book The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood, is my very first review (name is pixie-girl)!  It’s my 7th adventure. I hadn’t ever really thought about doing it,  but this year I decided to give it a go.  The publishing class I took last semester brought me back to books, and the ALA Midwinter meeting garnered me over 30 free books – advanced reader copies and uncorrected proofs.  So the time seemed right, and right to start with Atwood, my favorite author.  Looking forward to making this more of a regular event, not just a one-time adventure!

And the 6th – I went to Hogwarts

Who knew it was at the Museum of Science?  And I thought I liked the V&A in London.  The Harry Potter Exhibition was quite possibly the most brilliant thing I have done or will do in this town.  A mostly self-directed tour of the wonders of the Harry Potter world, the exhibit was filled with the creatures, props, and costumes used in the films.  A lot of what my friend Kim and I saw were in The Goblet of Fire, so that film now has a special place in my heart.  I wanted to try on Hermione’s Yule Ball gown in the worst way – I’m sure it would’ve fit.  I pulled up a Mandrake, threw a Quaffle through a hoop, sat in Hagrid’s big chair, which was really huge, and heard the Fat Lady sing!  There was so much I can’t even remember it all.  But it was brilliant – if only I didn’t have to come back…

    Tags: pole dancing

My adventure for this week is something I don’t see myself doing again. I no longer wonder why pole dancing classes at Crunch are so late on the schedule. Even at 8:30pm I found it completely awkward strutting myself around a pole in the group exercise room that is completely surrounded by windows. I typically don’t go to Crunch in the evenings (I’m a 6am-er) so it was unfortunate to learn that this was the time when all the hot, straight guys go to the gym and just happen to be using the weight machines around this room. Mistake number 1- apparently you’re supposed to where really short shorts so that you legs can squeeze around the pole and hold you up. I’m talking shorts so short that I could tell you the instructors shaving preference (gross, right). Mistake number 2- you are also encouraged to bring stripper heels. You cannot believe some of the stuff these girls were doing. It was actually a little impressive, but then I realized that the only real use for this training (unless my boyfriend decides to install a pole in our bedroom) is something that I find totally degrading. To each their own, but I think I’ll stick to pilates and spinning.

while it’s good you tried, I am sooooo relieved that you are opposed to a stripper pole in the bedroom.

8/52: Spinning my wheels without going anywhere

I have something against treadmills. Why would I run or walk in the same excruciatingly boring spot when I have the option of exploring all the sights, sounds and smells of a neighborhood? So my interest in taking a spinning class was kind of random. Different machine, same problem, right?

Not really, as I learned on Monday night. Add black lights, pounding music and an instructor yelling at me to stand on my pedals and run every few minutes, and there’s no room for boredom. Only time for sweating and wondering how badly my be-hind was going to hurt afterwards. (FYI: No amount of seat padding helps.)

It felt like a return to my step aerobic roots. (Thankfully, pictures of those days do not exist.) No talk of connecting breath and movement, no spirituality — just an intense, heart-thumping hour. Immediately afterwards, I felt wired in a not-so-great way. For the past few years I’ve been using exercise as a way to calm my mind, not to continue the chaos of my work day. The constant stimulation of the class was anything but relaxing. But by the time I was home, I felt energized in a positive way. This was definitely not the typical Monday night energy level I’d been used to for the past six months. While I can’t imagine I’ll make spinning a part of my weekly routine, I can see myself taking a class when I need an energy boost (or after a serious chow-down).

It’s good to kick it up a few notches and try a new routine. I’ll think I’ll slip something in to my schedule now myself. thanks!

    Week 10 – The Playlist

About two years ago, a friend of mine did a psychology or sociology or some such project that she asked me to participate in.  It was kind of an interesting idea, and I started thinking about it recently.  And ya know what, why not do my own version of this project as an adventure.  I love making playlists of my music, so that is how it will come into play.  But for this project to work, I need the help of you.  Yes, you.  The person reading this.  Even if you barely know me or don’t like me.

What I ask of you is to think of a song, any song at all, that for whatever reason makes you think of me in some way.  Maybe the lyrics remind you of a childhood event we had together, maybe it makes you feel angry and you hate me, maybe we sang the song together on a roadtrip together.  Whatever the reason, whatever the song, please tell me.  And after a week’s time, I will compile the songs together and make a Daniel Playlist.  Feel free to post the songs as comments on here, or e-mail me at d.amborn@gmail.com.  Oh, and please explain why you selected that song.  Don’t just say, “A Whole New World,” without telling me why, cause that would leave me with many questions.

Thanks for your help in this adventure!

White Wedding. When you told me you were pricing rings and asked me to look around in Hiroshima, I queued this up before going to the jeweler, and, ahem, trying on big blinging rings all in the sake of friendship.

After a long hiatus of posting, I’m back (and will hopefully catch up). Last weeks adventure was taking a dance class. The last time I took a class was over five years when I was on scholarship at Joel Hall Dance Center in Chicago. You’d think I would have done more with my minor in dance. After being away from the studio so long I was totally nervous, but I went to a benefit several months ago and learned of a class called “Sweaty Sundays.” After dropping my boyfriend off at the airport I shot up to Silverlake and just barely got into the noon class. I was defintely slower picking up the steps, but there were so many levels and everyone was just there to have fun so I didn’t feel any pressure to be perfect. So glad I took the adventure!

7/52: Freeloading and skiing in Colorado

This is a 2-for-1 adventure (but I’m counting it as No. 7 only): Adventure 7a was acting upon my sister-in-law’s invitation to stay at her sister’s house in Colorado. For a non-assertive person like myself, following up on an invitation like that is pretty out-of-character adventurous. I tend to convince myself that when people offer things or invite me places, they don’t really mean it and secretly hope I’ll forget as soon as the words pop out of their mouths. I decided to take her invitation at face value and asked if it was possible to stay there for a few days during DP’s spring break. So glad I did – the house, the scenery and the company (8 other family members joined us!) was just the R&R I needed after a stressful few months at work.

Adventure 7b was attempting to downhill ski again. I love all kinds of outdoor activities, but downhill skiing is far from my favorite. (Maybe it has something to do with the time I plowed straight down the middle of a hill at lightening speed and gave my ski a kiss at the bottom. Hello, fat lip!) Watching the winter Olympics and relentless hounding by skiing family members finally convinced me to join them for one day.

After a disappointing lesson in which I think became a worse skier for its two-hour duration, I hit the bunny hill hardcore with my nephew, a first-timer. By the end of the day, we were ready to hit a green trail with the other skiers. DP was kind and slowed down to my pace, and the scenery was gorgeous. But after making it to the bottom sans dramatic crash, I was ready to take off my skis and have a spiked hot chocolate. And I happily opted for a hike when others went skiing the next day. I’m glad I tried to ski again, but I now know, without any doubt, that my heart is in the ocean waves rather than on the slopes. I’m still dreaming about my next surfing adventure…

This picture was taken seconds after I fell, face-first,
    into a thigh-high snow bank
after saying to my snow-shoe companions,
“Let’s see if these snow shoes really work.”

    Answer: No.

So, I turned over and made a snow angel.

    2月のAdventures

February left me with little in the way of adventures.  You see, when it gets cold, I hibernate.  Sitting at home, watching movies and drinking.  Many a February are defined by that lifestyle.  I guess my adventure, though, was finding things that will facilitate future adventures.

These things include, but are not limited to, a basement bottle shop with over 300 imported beers and a guide to local sex museums across Japan.

#5 – Watch the first 8 hours of the new season of 24

    snapshot20100220175509

Jack, my friend, a lot of beer, and I.  For 8 hours.

I can’t think of anything witty to say along with this, except that everytime Jack swears, it’s translated as “Koosoh!”  It means “shit”.  You can make a drinking game out of it.

Expect March to fully make up for a lack of an interesting February.  Trust me!
