Week 2 – Power, Wisdom, and Courage

If anyone meets me for five minutes, they will for sure learn that I am a gigantic geek.  And I’m not afraid to admit this.  I will talk about my favorite TV show (Firefly), favorite book (Wizard’s First Rule), favorite movie (Lord of the Rings Trilogy)…basically any kind of favorite has to do with something nerdy.  I even went so far as to get a geek related tattoo.

For those of you who don’t know what the tattoo is, it is called The Triforce.  The Triforce is a symbol and holy relic in the video game franchise The Legend of Zelda (my favorite one).  Originally when I got this tattoo, I just wanted something that I thought looked sweet.  I told people that it had some meaning behind it, but that wasn’t entirely true.  At least, not at first.

Now, as I looked back at my first batch of adventures, I was trying to see which ones I attempted and failed, if any.  One that I feel I didn’t fully commit to was my week four adventure, Lifestyle . During that week, I did a lot of self-analysis on how I could improve my life moving forward.  And I feel I did put a lot of thought and effort into it.  But I didn’t have an exact plan, and as such, it wasn’t executed very well.  I didn’t have written, obtainable goals, or the steps I could take to achieve them.

Which brings me back to my tattoo.

As I take an honest look at myself, I can’t help but be drawn to my tattoo, to this thing that was meant to stamp myself as a geek.  But now, as I look at it, I realize how I can use this as a constant reminder to better myself.  I can use this metaphor from a video game to inspire and change my life. I really hate to tell you this, but your Zelda tattoo is screwed. The colors are definitely wrong. Red should be on top, blue on the left, and green on the right. Sorry for the truth.

yeah….. Power is on top, Wisdom on the left, Courage is on the right. Represented by the colors as stated by the other commenter….. sorrry.

    Alright, Friends:

I actually regret my efforts the last time I attempted this, having only made it maybe 10 adventures in, and only writing up about 3 of the adventures. They’re on here someplace. So this year, I vow to complete all 52 adventures, will photo and blog, by December 31, 2012.

My list is below, and is mostly centered around the New York area with sidebars to DC, New England, Chicago, and Florida. I’ve posted it here in its entirety because, unless there’s a good reason not to, you are 100% invited to any of these adventures. Friends and strangers alike. Just let me know!

January: Attend Ballet (Copeland at the New York City Ballet with Surkhab; Tickets already purchased)
March: Skydiving (Skydive New Jersey with Amie; Tickets already purchased)
March: Recording session (For Twelfth Night, so let’s call this one invite-only)
April: Cherry Blossom Festival (no dates set, but it’s in Washington, DC – all are invited)

Mark these are some savory selections! I can’t wait to join you New York Neighbor!

Mark! I have wanted to go to the Cherry Blossom Festival in D.C. for some time now (since it’s more likely than attending the one in Japan). I think that may be a fun meet-up, if I’m not broke from the long vacation I’m taking right beforehand!
Great list, lots of ideas. On New Years’ I asked my kids what they want to do in the New Year and my 8 year-old responded quickly, “Sky-diving!” Obviously you and him are more adventurous than me.

      Best of luck! 🙂

Amazing!!! I can’t wait to read on your adventures!! I”m in Chicago…if you’re looking for an adventure companion when your here, let me know.:) I love cupcakes and was contemplating taking a bike ride through Chicago to different cupcake speciality shops to enjoy in their sugary deliciousness. Plus, we burn calories at the same time…just an idea:)

    The Last Year and a Half…or so…

As I was compiling my list of adventures that I could take in the coming 52 weeks, I realized that even though I haven’t been doing them regularly or blogging about them, I still have been living a nice life of adventure since my last post in April 2010.  So, a quick recap of the last bit of my life…feel free to use these adventures for yourself in the coming year!

I overcame my fear of horses in late May, 2010:

    I got married August 7th, 2010:

I went skydiving in early October, 2010:

    Chose My Own Adventure

Okay friends. So adventures usually find me. I’ll get lost someplace and follow where the spirit takes me, meeting people and making plans as I go. So planning adventures in advance is a bit of a new thing for me. As a result, I’m not very good at it. The first 20 that I’ve come up with are below. The rest, dear friends, are up to you.

I am hereby committing to engaging in any and all suggestions that you offer that are legal, adventurous, feasible, and at least arguably safe. Come friends, we have 32 more adventures to discover.

    1) Polar Bear Plunge – Chicago Illinois – January 1, 2010
    2) [Redacted]
    3) Fire a handgun (non-wimpy)
    4) Appear onstage sober
    5) Learn to cook a French dish
    6) Host a dinner party – and actually cook things, having removed the sweaters from my oven
    7) Redo counters and floor in Kitchen/bathrooms
    8) Find a job
    9) Complete the 300 workout
    10) Finally found my foundation
    a) Develop a way to avoid unnecessary alliteration
    11) Design that second tattoo I’ve been imagining for years.
    12) Get it – from a tattoo artist with a scary name – paid with tips.
    13) Memorize 1 Corinthians: 13
    14) Memorize the last monologue from Jumpers
    15) Build a fire, spend all night tending it and watch the sun rise
    16) Learn to do a standing backflip.
    17) Go on a squad car ride-along.
    18) Take nephew to attend his first play
    19) Snowball fight
    20) Poetry slam

Okay, wordpress is a tricky minx. It totally changed my number 8 into an emoticon. You should all just know that I didn’t do that on purpose.

Okay I keep hearing about this 300 workout. What is it?

    • mjperry1 8:26 pm on January 3, 2010 Permalink

Well, the guys in the movie 300 worked out many hours a day, many days a week, for several months before shooting began (sidenote: they also ate a diet of wild game). The 300 workout was originally conceived as a test for those guys. I think it was something like they had to pass this fitness test in order to actually be on screen. Or something. But it wasn’t an actual workout that they did regularly. The list for the test is:

      25x Pull-up +
      50x Deadlift @ 135# +
      50x Push-up +
      50x Box Jump @ 24” box +
      50x Floor Wiper @ 135# (one-count) +
50x KB Clean and Press @ 36# (KB must touch floor between reps) +
      25x Pull-up

you can find more about it at http://www.gymjones.com/knowledge.php?id=35

Ok, I couldn’t figure out how to start my own comment, so I’m replying to yours. But pretend like this is a new comment altogether. (Although I enjoyed reading your list)

This is what I have so far, not necessarily to be done in this order:

      1) Get accupuncture
      2) Take a “hot” yoga class
      3) Get a Brazillian wax
      4) Take the kids to Medieval Times
      5) Spend a weekend with the kids in Amish country
      6) Volunteer with the St. Bernard Project in New Orleans
      7) Take a pole-dancing class
      8) Let my friend Jon teach me how to knit
      9) Eat only raw food for a week
      10) Milk a cow
      11) Visit an Indian reservation, sleep in a teepee

Looking forward to completing some of these 🙂

To create your own posts, you have to (1) register for an account with wordpress, and then (2) email kimberlyhula@gmail.com. She’ll set you up as an author.

ps – I love that wordpress keeps changing the number 8 to a smiley.

    • yearof52adventures 2:54 am on January 5, 2010 Permalink

Jackie, let me know if you need me to set you up as an author. We would love to have you. AND, do all the aforementioned adventures! They are wild and awesome. I’m all about the teepee.
