Adventure #5: Deoksu Palace and 8 Course Japanese Dinner

    Photobucket

I planned to go to the Seoul Museum of Art on Sunday to scope out the Andy Warhol exhibit with a friend. However, by the time we got there, the museum was closed. Luckily, we were near a palace and with the entrance fee being only 1,000 won (less than 1 USD), we decided to check it out. The palace is called Deoksu, and it was built in the mid fifteenth century. Out of the all the palaces in Seoul, it is the smallest. This was perfect, since it was close to getting dark out. So we were able to walk around the grounds before it was dark. If I could figure out how to post pictures on here, I would do so. But I’m technologically challenged…You can read more about this palace here http://www.lifeinkorea.com/Travel2/65.

    Photobucket

After the palace we stumbled a upon a pricey Japanese restaurant, but since we were in the mood for fish we decided to treat ourselves. The dining area was fun in and of itself. It was a private room with a sliding door and chairs on the floor allowing for your feet to stretch down about 2 feet below the tabletop. The meal started with tea and soup. Following came about 7 courses of fish. The first 2 were raw. I have taken a liking to raw fish more than ever since residing in Korea. I honestly don’t know what kind of fish it was, but I tried all of it. This was an adventure on its own. It was all very tasty and fresh. Again, if I knew how to post photos, I would, but…The bill came to 50,000 won each, which is probably the most I’ve spent on a meal since I’ve been here. Wait, it’s probably the most I’ve ever spent on dinner for myself!

The Fifth Adventure at the MFA

We’re lucky here at Simmons because there are two great museums nearby, and both are free to Simmons students! Friday a small group of us took a trip to Ancient Egypt, looking at some wonderful pieces of the burial chamber of a Governor who was apparently quite important. The artwork was beautiful and the boats that had been buried with the Governor were unbelievable and in brilliant condition. The head displayed was impressive as well! I left with a bookmark of the Hieroglyphic Alphabet, and a yen to get a tattoo of the Eye of Horus! 🙂

4/52- A Serious Commitment to Science

I don’t ever remember thinking that boys were better at science and math, I just knew that I wasn’t very good at either of them. Math and I never really got along, but as a nature-loving kid, science intrigued me.  It was hard for me though, and I readily backed away from the subject. Reading and writing came easily, and I was praised from a young age for having skill in both arenas. As is the lazy way of living life, I threw myself into a world of words and allowed a passion for English to justify an avoidance of science. A pretty successful run in Physical Science and Biology could not suppress my growing fear that I would fail out of Chemistry in my Junior year. I convinced my guidance counselor that I didn’t need to take it, and enrolled in the “easier” Ecology class, primarily occupied by academically low seniors seeking an easy A (or, maybe, a good effort B).

Oh, lovely! I’ve always wondered what tattoo I’d get were I to get one, it’s great to see how someone else reasoned out their own. Such a beautiful choice, too.

    1月のAdventures

Brian here with a month of adventures.  4 weeks, 4 adventures.  The task (adventure?) of learning how to write a decent post is still unattained.  Awesome. I write more over at my regular blog, http://www.gaijinbash.com, click the links if you want to read more about each adventure.

    1. Shinnenkai with my Motorcycle Riding Club

    20100110-DSC_7314

Shinnenkai is another excuse for people to drink in Japan. It roughly translates to let’s drink for the first time in the new year party. Hopped on the bike and headed down to the Izu peninsula. This is the one place near Tokyo where palm trees line the road and the beach, ocean, and sky aren’t all shades of grey. You can read more here.

    2. Visit to an Abandoned Dinosaur Exhibition

    20100124-DSC_7912

Haikyo is the word for modern ruins in Japan. Mostly just hotels built during the bubble economy, these are the decaying reminders of overspending in a capitalist society. And they are totally rad! I have a fleeting interest in them, and make it out once in a blue moon. This time, I went to a dinosaur exhibition at a snake center. Read more about the dinosaurs here. And the freaky second part at the snake center here.  Be warned, photos of hella dead snakes.

    Adventuregrams!

My adventure this week isn’t to procrastinate while doing homework–I’m just doing that extracurricularly–but I’ve been poking around on the internet anagram server. Anagrams for “fifty two adventures” include…

    A vow-entrusted fifty
    A vested, witty runoff
    A fervid twenty tofus
    A overfed, fun twit sty
(I’m sure the IAS says this with utmost love and respect)
    Wafted nervy outfits
    True fated nifty vows

    And my personal favorite,

    Defeatist: try fun vow.

Did I miss any? Are you, too looking for an extracurricular procrastination destination?

4/52: Holding a beach-inspired yoga fundraiser for Ocean Cure

This is an adventure with a history and a purpose and a future … my most exciting one to date.

It all started with a long-awaited adventure in August 2009. After years of saying I wanted to learn how to surf, I decided that I was really going to learn how to surf. (You know how sometimes you get so obsessed with a dream that you forget that all it takes is, um, just doing it?) I chose Indo Jax Surf School, based in Wilmington, NC, because of its commitment to providing charity surf camps through its non-profit, Ocean Cure. I was happy that my tuition for the camp would support future charity camps.

After an amazing week of surfing with some fantastic instructors, I returned to Ohio knowing that I wanted to contribute more than just my week’s tuition. I felt inspired and excited and called to act. After brainstorming with the director about how a land-locked Ohioan could help, I decided that I would attempt to raise enough money to fund at least one charity camp in 2010 by holding beach-inspired yoga classes in Ohio and Kentucky. I’d never attempted anything like this before.

Wow, that is great! You’re right to feel proud. How are you thinking of promoting your next event?

Thanks! I think the yoga studio will draw more people because there’s already a good base of students, and it was promoted through a newsletter this week. I’ve been creating and mailing posters to studios and businesses that may cater to yogis, plus contacting newspapers and radio stations. And, I’ve been letting people hang flyers (this is an accomplishment — i usually have a hard time accepting help) and shamelessly inviting everyone I know. It’s a lesson in assertiveness for me … one I definitely need. But, it feels easier to ask for money when it’s not for me, and also when I feel like I’m giving people something in return.

As a dyed in the wool hedonist. I hold firm to the belief that each and every day must, by necessity, hold some sort of pleasure, This could take tjhe form of something relatively small and indirect such as my pleasure at reading my daughters post this morning, expressing her joy at waking to birdsong outside her window. or something other, such as an invitation to dine with good friends. Rarely, quite rarely, are we so lucky as to find the pleasure of a new passion. For this weeks adventure, I decided to unearth my husbands compound bow and learn how to shoot it. After the rather large setback of finding myself lacking the necessary strenght to draw the bow, I was finally granted with the aid of said husbands muscle and the patience of my sons character (he nocked my arrows) the incredible satisfaction of releasing that damm arrow toward its target! NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!!! I was however able to hit the backdrop once before losing the last arrow into the woods. I’M HOOKED!!!! I WENT SHOPPING FOR MY OWN BOW TODAY!!!!! My thanks to Club 52 for the challenge!

Oy! I just typed this long narractive about my last adventure and when I tried to upload/insert a photo it had an error and erased everything. Unfortunately, I don’t have much time so here’s the abridged version. My Week 4 Adventure was taking my two lovely golden retrievers to the Malibu Dog Beach (note: one of my ladies is blind). It was over an hour drive, about a half hour walk to figure out which part of the beach was dog friendly, and then an afternoon of racing up and down the beach, getting pulled into the water and getting soaking wet (I was not in a bathing suit and the water was freezing- it is the Pacific in January), and avoiding getting a ticket for letting my doggies off their leashes. Quite an adventure! Next time I think we’ll try Huntington Beach since they have an off-leash section.
