Adventure #3: Enjoying Chicago Orange- Line Style

I enjoyed a part of the famous Chicago “L” transportation system from one end to the other today.  I jumped on the Orange-Line at Midway Airport on Chicago’s south west side. I ventured through the city, then taking that famous loop around the heart of  downtown.  The trip only took about 45 minutes- it was short and sweet:)

Adventure #3- Take a bikram (“hot”) yoga class. Some adventures are for the purpose of conquering your fears. This was merely to try something new, something a little controversial, something that could potentially stretch (literally and figuratively) my body to the very limits of its ability. I took a 90 minute bikram yoga class last Friday and I have to say, this is something I will do again. I left feeling like I had just gotten a massage. I have a very difficult time relieving stress and being in the present and this class helped me with both. I think it is now a weekly necessity. I challenge my fellow adventurerers that are need of some R&R to try.

I’m going to add that to my list! I took a yoga class regularly last year, and I’ve been meaning to start up again. Maybe I’ll try this first.

Adventure 2 – Making a Cake from Scratch

This was a very adventurous week. My second adventure was supposed to be to attend a professional basketball game. I bought tickets for my family to attend a professional basketball game. The professional basketball game was the Orlando Magics vs. Charlotte Bobcats. I live about 25 miles from Orlando. On Wednesday, my son, Jacob, asked me if the game was on Friday. I replied, “No, Jake. It is on Saturday.” About 15 minutes later, he said, “Mom, I think you bough

t the tickets for the game in Charlotte.” I said, “I don’t think so.”, as I am walking to get the tickets. I get the tickets and look at the location of the sporting event and sure enough the tickets were for the game in Charlotte, NC. Then, I started laughing and saying “What am I going to do with these tickets?” I called my sister, who lives near Charlotte, if she w

ould like to attend the Charlotte Bobcats vs. Orlando Magic on Saturday night. She said, “Yes.” I then had to get the tickets to the post office and mail them to her overnight. On Thursday, I went to the post office and mailed the tickets to her. She got the tickets on Friday. She attended the ballgame on Saturday night. Needless to say, the Magic won in overtime. Go Magic!!! It was an adventure within itself to get rid of the tickets.

    Tags: 1/2 Marathon, Future Adventures,

For Adventure Seekers out there who are jealous of those Adventurers who Polar Plunged into the icy depths of beautiful lake Michigan on the first of the year (such as myself), there’s a chance to plan out a Plunge in the future, and raise money for a good cause: http://www.chicagopolarplunge.org/site3.aspx. A few Adventurers are planning a to join this organized plunge in March and to raise some money for the Special Olympics. I also plan to make and wear a 52 Adventures t-shirt. Do we have a logo yet? Also, I know that some other folks had “run a 1/2 marathon” on their lists, I believe this is the one I’m doing in Chicago (also in some 52 Adventures garb, of course) –so I thought I’d share: http://www.131marathon.com/13_1_Chicago.htm (June 13, 2010 -plenty of time to train!!

    Digesting the Stone

“Which poems will you read?” Brad asked, to which I responded, “I guess it’s between my concerning ones or my really concerning ones”. And that’s not a stretch. I don’t write poetry in the hopes of one day publishing. I harbor no ill-conceived notions of being crowned a laureate or lyricist or zany wordsmith. Rather, I write poems when red-faced. I write when I’m mad or sad or any intensified emotion that allows the emoter, me, to bellow in unconventional syntax. And it works. I write and write until I’ve exhausted myself. And when I’m poetically tuckered out, I’m usually in a place better than I was before, which is important when one references the titles of some of my poems, namely: “Your Living Wake”, “My Sister’s Eulogy” (note, she is still alive), “Eulogy For the Ugly”, among others.

If your poems are as well written as this narrative, then I’m sure to be impressed. What a great adventurer!

3/52 The Proof is in the Polish

For most women my age, getting a manicure would not be considered an adventure. A typical Saturday afternoon or pre-event ritual might more accurately describe the act. For me, the manicure I got today was unique. My first.

There are a couple reasons why getting a manicure today was a big deal. To begin, I’m really squirmy about being touched by strangers. I just get all uncomfortable and weird.

Secondly, even though I love to rock an “I don’t care what anyone thinks about me” attitude, I’m often really uncomfortable in my own skin. About my body—not just the shape, or my weight, but all of it. I feel like so many routine beauty processes involve too much of a microscopic look at my physical features – I am scared that I’ll be judged for my eyebrows, my pores, my teeth, my waistline and yes, even my hands and nails. I prefer to looked at from far away—I’m just lamely more self conscious that I like to admit.

The final reason why getting a manicure was a big deal is because of its close proximity to the “definition” of femininity. I like paining my nails and wearing make up and all that, but sometimes I get nervous admitting to enjoying things that are traditionally feminine because I think other people don’t really see me that way. I would worry that if I wanted to get my nails done someone would respond with, “Really? You? Do you even paint your nails? Hm. That just doesn’t seem like you.” It is like me, but maybe just not the way everyone always sees me.

For these reasons I have managed to avoid getting my nails done for all of my life. Even though I’ve often looked at them and thought about how I know they would look nicer if I would just suck it up and get them done.

    So, today, I did.

3/52: Taking my husband on a date

    On a fun date–my sister-in-law’s 70s-themed birthday bash–a few years ago

Inspired by fellow adventurers (adventurerchaser and Berton)–one of whom went on a date every night last week and another who completed homework about love for his upcoming marriage–I invited my husband (DP) on a date as soon as I arrived home on Friday night. Why is this an adventure? For a few reasons:
    1. My natural introverted tendency is to remove myself from the world on Friday nights, so offering to do anything besides put on my PJs and sulk was a major accomplishment.
    2. I have been the grumpiest, most annoyed, and likely most annoying, partner on the planet this week. Which actually made our date more of an adventure for DP, who probably accepted my invitation out of fear about what might happen if he declined.
    3. DP and I have not gone out, alone, in a very long time. See point number 1 for insight on why this is so.

My first suggestion was to try a new restaurant, but since I was trying to be super-spontaneous as well, we decided to get tickets for the 8 pm performance of Spring Awakening. The theatre is next to one of our favorite spots, so we nixed a new place and headed downtown for a pre-show appetizer and beer. We held hands as we walked from the car, we laughed as he played air drum during some of the more rockin’ numbers (I usually just want to die of embarrassment but I was steadfast in my adventurous spirit), and, not wanting the night to end early, we headed to a somewhat new-to-us pub for appetizer and beer #2. We talked, we cracked up, we enjoyed each others’ company. And I felt hopeful that by the end of 2010, a Friday night like that will feel commonplace rather than adventurous.

    Have Legs, Will Carry

I am secretly fond of my legs.

I don’t tell anyone for fear of sounding vain, or receiving an eye roll or a haughty nod when wearing a skirt. And, to be fair, there’s not a lot to boast. Sure, I have long legs, runner’s legs that make already short dresses shorter. But I can’t take them on tour. I have a folded skin scar from a poisonous spider bite on my left knee. I can count, at any given time, upwards to ten bruises that make a pattern of my calves. I’m a lax shaver. Basically, my legs are a hot mess.

But they are mine. They’ve carried me across finish lines in races and lend me some advantage on dance floors. And I like them.

So I can’t defend my need to cover them, save my penchant for pant suits. And, because I am often in pants I think the allure of a pant-less Sunday was enough to warrant a bare-all adventure. On public transport.

The plan was simple: take off your pants on the subway.

Adventure # 3 Dying my own hair

This adventure snuck up on me and I kind of like that.  I started dying my hair probably when I was a freshman in high school. I think I probably dyed it from then through mid college. My mom always did it for me. I stopped dying my hair when I saw how ridiculous my younger sister’s hair looked. She has wickedly curly hair and all of it never seems to be fully colored, roots are always showing and its just a mess.  I haven’t dyed my hair for probably 4 years…until tonight!

I don’t really do a lot with my “look” i had the same curled under bangs unfortunately until my roommate at the time introduced me to the side bangs. It changed my life. I don’t really have the skill to use product or fancy equipment or anything so when it comes to my hair, however it dries is kind of what you get. But I’m ready for a change. In a time when I am trying to decide what I want for myself in my personal life, the first change is my hair. I went to Walgreens and picked out a hair color ALL ON MY OWN. I made calls to 2 friends who unfortunately did not answer their phones and  left me to decide between Mahogany or Medium Brown. I went with a medium deep bronze or something. My original hair color? I always thought it was a kind of drab dishwater blonde but I think it has gotten a little darker with age.

#3: Attend a Science Fiction Convention

I’m a big science fiction fan.  It runs in my family.  Give me your Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Farscape–franchise or standalone, short story, novel, television- or mini-series or movie.  I’m a sucker for a good myth arc, be it preachy, quippy, campy, or politically allegorical.  I guess you could say that I enjoy slipping into other worlds, or the idea that this one has whole secret patterns we just haven’t noticed yet.

One universe that does exist, but which I’ve never explored, is the Science Fiction Convention itself.  I’ve been invited, I’ve been coaxed, but I’ve never committed to going.  It’s usually the road trip that puts me off.  Imagine my surprise to find that a science fiction convention was in town last weekend. I’d already missed the first day of Arisia 2010 by the time I discovered it, and I had plans to attend the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting.  Since it’s the year of 52 adventures I decided to take a break from a conference that used science to organize fiction to visit a science fiction convention. It was just in Cambridge!  Not a long trip at all. Except, of course, that the day I picked to venture out with a couple of like-minded neighbors was one of the slushiest I’ve ever seen. Appropriately enough, we now had a quest.
