    Week 5 – Polar Plunge 

    One of my earliest best friends in life was Richard Cypher (this is a fictional name I am using to hide the true identity of my friend because I am not sure if he wants me to talk about him on an online website).  For the first many, many years of my life, he was like a brother to me.  I spent more days and weeks than I could ever remember over at his house, playing night games with Richard, his brothers and sisters, and the other neighborhood kids.  Over time, I grew apart from him (as we all have from many childhood friends).  But the few times I have seen him since school, he still always manages to put a smile on my face and make me wish that I had kept in better contact with him throughout these past years.

    Week 4 – Lifestyle 

    I wouldn’t say that my life is going in the wrong direction.  I wouldn’t say that I am out of shape.  I wouldn’t say that I am lost in the world, that I am misguided, that I have my priorities mixed up, or anything of the sort.  But that doesn’t mean I can’t try to improve my life and lifestyle.

    That cliche saying, “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it,” is sometimes just bullshit.  My life isn’t broken.  But parts of it, I feel, should be fixed.  For example, as I said, I am not out of shape. But that doesn’t mean I am in shape.  I can do something about that.  I can easily adjust parts of my life to work towards getting into shape.  My relationship with my fiance isn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination.  But I can make it better.  I can be a better man for her.

    My week 2 adventure of looking at my relationship with my fiance made me think about doing that with my life in general.  My life is drastically changing in front of my eyes.  Sometimes, I need to pull a Ferris Bueller and just look around, enjoy the things I have and love the fact that I am a very blessed human being.  But at times, I need to keep chugging along with it so I don’t get left behind in the dust.  I need to adapt and change so that I can continue to grow, so that I don’t become stagnant.  And if I start making the changes now, at the beginning of the year, the rest of these adventures will be more meaningful to me.

    This week was another thoughtful one for me.  I put many, many hours into thinking about how I can change as a person to make not only my life, but those around me more fulfilling.  Not very exciting at the moment, but if I can stick with my plans, the excitement will grow in my everyday life.

    Week 3 – Sushi 

    I have had a very difficult time finding a quality and cheap Japanese joint in Minneapolis.  There are apparently some great ones, but also expensive (which I can’t swing at the moment).  So I have probably complained about that a bunch and inquired many times for new places to eat.  So then I told myself, screw it, I will just make my own sushi!

    Week 2 – My Marriage (not the act, but the thought of it) 

    I will be getting married this summer (August 7th, 2010) and I am fortunate enough that the person who will be overseeing my wedding is also one of my best friends.  I know he cares truly about the ceremony, about what is said, about how it is presented and received. So what does he do for me?  He gives me fucking homework.  BASTARD!  But in retrospect, the homework is VERY beneficial.

    Week 1 – Jucy Lucy 

    For those not sure what a Jucy Lucy is, it is basically a cheeseburger with the cheese cooked on the inside of the hamburguer.  They were created at Matt’s Bar in south Minneapolis.  I have always wanted to original, so tonight, my friends and I set out to have one.

    Check out this line.  It extended outside.  Now, to many a line that reaches outside a building may not seem extraordinary.  But in Minnesota, that means something!  The air temperature was -4 degress fahrenheit, -12 with wind chill!  It was that cold, and yet people were waiting outside for the food.

    Man, look at that cheese drip.  It was amazing.  One of the best burgers I have ever had.

    Time for some thrilling heroics (the real post this time) 

    Ok.  So a few days ago, I started typing up my list of adventures and ideas for the coming year.  But I wanted to give myself some time and consideration before posting it (as well as organize it and such).  But when I wanted to hit  the “save” button, I apparently hit the “publish” one.  So the list I posted before was incomplete and all that jazz.  Here is what I meant to say:

    (Oh, PS before I post my ideas, I am keeping my own 52 adventures blog.  When I blog, I get kind of long winded and crazy with it.  So to spare some people who may not know me or want to read the unabridged versions of my exploits, my blog is http://bertons52.wordpress.com/  I will be posting short versions of my adventures with a link to the longer version here on this website when they happen though)

    Food

    • Stop complaining about not finding good sushi in Minneapolis and make my own
    • Make a five-course dinner for a party of eight people
    • Give up soda to help me get into shape for my wedding
    • Be vegetarian for a week

    Twin Cities and Minnesota

    • Go sail boating on Lake Calhoun
    • Go to Al’s Breakfast
    • Go to a non-football University of Minnesota sports event (probably going to be a wrestling duel)
    • Start a snowball fight with the kids at my local elementary school
    • Go dog-sledding up  in northern Minnesota
    • Take my lady for a night on the town that isn’t simply dinner and a movie
    • Eat a Jucy Lucy at Matt’s Bar (where they originated)

    Crazy or Relaxing

    • Look fear in the face and win (ride a horse)
    • Get a tattoo (popular choice it seems)
    • Learn to dance (other than ballroom, which I already can do)
    • Spend a day watching classic films
    • Fire a hand gun
    • Get hypnotized
    • Go to my bachelor party
    • Get married (this was a pre-planned one, not a random thought, just so you know)
    • Go to the National NCAA Wrestling Tournement in Omaha with my father and two brothers

    Man-power

    • Run a 5K
    • Climb a mountain
    • Canoe a long stretch of river
    • Listening day (no talking)
    • Shut-it-off day (no electricity)
    • Get more involved with my friends lives and show them I care
    • Attend grad school (or apply for many more if I don’t get in)

    Out and About

    • Go to a high school sporting events and cheer loudly
    • Go to la ive dog or horse race
    • Attend a film festival
    • Get all snazzed up and go to a balet, opera, or some such event
    • Volunteer at a shelter
    • Go to a museum
    • Go to Six Flags
    • Attend a religious service of a religion not my own

    So far my ist is at thirty-five adventures.  And if the math skills I teach my preschool students is correct, that leaves me with seventeen adventures left to come up with.  I will probably swipe some of this stellar community’s awesome ideas as they appear, but also, please feel free to suggest some more or invite me on your own!

    Oh, and Hula, a Boston adventure sounds GREAT!  But I challenge you to come to a Minnesota adventure with me (or maybe we can meet up in Chicago for one?)  Your Minnesota adventure should be to come to my wedding August 7th!  Here’s my deal (I already talked with Becky about it) if you do come, you can speak at it like you wanted to 🙂  I will call you later in the week to chat about it.

    I have known Hula for close to three years now, and this little idea of hers is a perfect example of why I cherish her as a friend. Interestingly enough, she told me about this idea right when I realized how boring my life is. Since then, I have given a lot of thought to how I was going to make 2010 a year worth remembering. And the ideas so far are…

    Food

    • Stop complaining about not finding good sushi in Minneapolis and make my own
    • Make a five-course dinner for a party of eight people

    Wild

    • Look fear in the face and win (aka – attempt
    • Get a tattoo (popular choice it seems)
