#2: No Pants T Ride – “But get on that train right here.”
January 10th, 2010: Boston’s Society of Sponteneity’s third annual No Pants T Ride. Wearing regular underwear in public doesn’t violate decency laws; wearing regular underwear and a sweater plus a coat, scarf, hat, and knee socks gives you maybe eight times more coverage than your average bathing suit. It’s legal, but it’s strange, unexpected, and horrifyingly cold– an excellent fit for the second of 52 adventures. The Alewife T station is the northern end of Boston’s red line, and looks kind of like a stern Soviet aviation museum. Participants were instructed to meet there (still in pants) and find for organizers with question mark umbrellas. Kim and I got there early, before BSOS popped up, and immediately sought out coffee. It’s important to be alert for public transporation pants-shedding. We approached the nearest restaurant in Alewife–approached, that is, until we saw the wild turkey standing on the stoop. Staring at us. Daring. When it comes down to it a gigantic bird is a stronger deterrent than even the cruelest Yelp review, so we tracked back to the in-station Dunkin’ Donuts counter. I prepped that coffee on a metal payphone table and went over two facts made clearer by caffeine: “The Summer Shack” had a large, live turkey for a bouncer, and it was not the strangest thing I was going to see that hour.

Trying to find powerful advertising that isn’t completely full of it? Sorry to bug you on your contact form but actually that’s exactly where I wanted to make my point. We can send your promotional text to websites via their contact forms just like you’re reading this note right now. You can specify targets by keyword or just start bulk blasts to sites in the location of your choice. So let’s assume you need to push through an ad to all the mortgage brokers in the US, we’ll scrape websites for only those and post your promo to them. As long as you’re advertising a product or service that’s relevant to that business category then you’ll be blessed with an awesome result!

Adventure #1: The Non-Smoking, Work-Out Bandit
Hola! sorry for starting in a week late, but my long-time pal and fellow adventurer (jscribe) told me about this awesome idea and after hearing about it, I decided to join in. SOOO, here I am!!! This is also my first venture into the blogging world. I’m a bit nervous….EEEK!
Anyhoots, I have thought about the different adventures I would like to have this year. This is my list thus far:
go to the movies by myself, cook a live lobster (yes, Julia Child style), cook a five course meal, run a 5k, sky-diving, sing karaoke, ice-skating, learn about a professional sport, try sushi, visit the museum of contemporary art, take a salsa class, take a cooking class, go to a restaurant by myself, keep my phone bill below $90.00, be on-time, make a pizza, get my neighbor to have a conversation with me (I always say ‘hi’ and he just stares), approach someone at a bar (I’m painfully shy), learn how to make fancy drink (or two), stay at a bed and breakfast, play whirley-ball, pay it forward, wear a bow-tie …..
…I’m still thinking about the rest of them.
For my first adventure, I quit smoking. I smoked for the past 15 years. It was a social thing at first, but then became a hardcore addiction. Over the last several years, I would smoke a pack a day if not more on the weekends. SO, on January 1st at about 2:00 a.m., I smoked my last cigarette. it was extremely tough the first couple of days, but its been getting easier. One day at a time, right?! to make sure I did not pick up smoking again, I calculated the amount i spent monthly on cigarettes and signed a year-long contract with a trainer at my gym. I’ve had about 5 sessions now, and I am feeling sore great!!!
I am looking forward to 2010 and reading about all of your adventures and sharing mine.
Best,
Roberto

Oh Roberto! I’m so glad to see you here! your list looks great, I cant wait to hear more about your adventures. Quitting smoking might be a hard one to beat, but a new adventure every week is just one more reason not to be a smoker! I was just thinking today about adding “Iceskating” to my list of adventures. Lets head up to the Wrigley rink some weekend soon, ok? This year is going to be awesome!

awesome list! I was a “figure skater” for 7 years and I can say with great pleasure it’s a lot of fun. Once you get the hang of it there is something quite cool about gliding around on something so fragile with steel blades attached to your feet. I’m interested to hear how the skating goes. I’m also pretty sure i’m going to quit smoking this year. I’m ready. March 1st is my quit date. If I tried it now right after the first of the year i’d just chalk it up to a new years resolution. this will make it feel more concrete. Let me know any advice you may have. Good luck on those adventures they sound fun!

It’s 10 in the p.m.. Where’s YOUR mother?
Wow! You guys are just cooking with gas! I’m having the loveliest time reading about your extraordinary adventures.
At present Jen has eaten an Ethiopian feast, Jane went pantless on the T (and was consequently photographed for the Boston Herald), Chris survived a sandstorm, co-admin Rebecca’s mom survived a slew of 1st graders, Dawn drove hundreds of miles solo, I participated in my first poetry reading and SO.MANY.MORE. If this is just the start of week 2, I have absolutely no idea what to expect for the rest of the year. But I do know this: 2010 is full of so much crazy promise. And to think, we still have another 50 and some weeks of fabulous adventuer to look forward to!
Keep doing what you’re doing. You do it so well!
xoxo

Adventure #1- Try Ethiopian Food.
I went to Nyala on S. Fairfax in Los Angeles (very good Zagat rating). I got the Vegetarian Combination so that I could try as much as possible. It included: yemiser wot (red lentil stew), kik alecha (mild yellow split peas), defen yemiser wot (whole lentil stew), yatakit wot (mixed vegetables), yabesha gommen (collard greens).
A few things to note- everything is seasoned with fresh garlic and ginger and you eat with your hands (including the side salad).
Here were the instructions:
1. Tear off a small piece of ‘injera’ ( a crepe-like soudough bread) with your hands and place it on the dish of your choice.
2. Grasp your fingers to scoop up the food into bite size portions you desire.
3. Mold the bread until it soaks up the savory flavors that are essential to each dish.

What an awesome adventure. I’m so afraid of new foods this is something I should consider doing.

52 Adventures equals my first adventure in blogging!
Hello? Am I on? Is this working? I have never blogged before so this is an adventure all on its own! I am thrilled to be a part of 52 Adventures!! I have enjoyed making my “list.” I have been giving it a lot of thought and a lot of questions have come up too. What if I have a busy work week and don’t have the time for an ADVENTURE? Should I make a list of more than 52 things so I can be choosy? What if I do 2 in one week? What if something happens and its a spontaneous adventure, does it make the list after I’ve done it? After having voiced all of these I have come to the decision that their really aren’t any parameters. There are no limitations or expectations. I think it is important for me just to do something! So with that, I share with you all MY LIST thus far.

#2: No Pants T Ride (pre-adventure)
http://www.facebook.com/#/event.php?eid=194245607559&ref=ts
So it’s really happening, and I’m really going to be a participant.
As I sit here trying to pick an album for my morning commute, it dawns on me for the first time that whichever one I choose will be remembered forever as the album from that time I rode the T pantsless. That adds a pretty new dose of realism. It’s a monumental choice to make at 9:00 on a Sunday morning. The way I figure it, the only way I can keep from “breaking character”–showing so much as a snicker as commuters drop trou en masse–is to choose something upbeat enough that I can nod along with drowsy intent. I haven’t picked one yet. I think it’s going to have to be a spur-of-the-moment choice, which makes sense, because that’s pretty much the only way to decide this is a good idea.
Have a late-breaking urge to join up? We’re meeting at the Alewife T stop at noon. Look at the folks with the question mark umbrellas; they’re the organizers from Boston S.O.S., who’ll give out routing information. Additionally, if you sign up for an account beforehand (http://www.soscities.org/) and give your username to an organizer, you’ll get points in that web site’s currency which can be converted into donation dollars for a charity of your choice.
If time, distance or common sense deter you from participating, you can still track updates through the twitter #NoPantsBoston hashtag at http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23NoPantsBoston. The fact that it takes place underground will probably keep updates limited, but maybe the people on the above-ground lines will be extra talkative.

I think it goes without saying that this was a successful and press-happy adventure:

2/52: Walking to the library
I’m often dashing to the library with overdue books, trying to stuff them into the drop box minutes before opening time to avoid accruing even more fees. I actually like paying the small fines for books, but when I borrow movies I try to meet the due date– $2/day adds up quickly. So, this morning I needed to return Rachel Getting Married (still not sure what I think of it) by 10 am. On a typical day, I’d hop in my car and drive down the street to the Madisonville Library. But I didn’t feel like swiping the snow off my car. And I have never, ever walked to the library in my nearly 9 years of living 1.1 miles away from it. It seemed like an adventure waiting to happen.

Seems so simple but is so important. I walk pretty much everywhere–but i might need to add a “walk to explore, not just to get from point A to point B” to my list.
-
eatveggiesdrinkwine
I agree — I walk as a form of exercise, so I’m usually trying to walk as fast as I can. It was nice to give myself permission to stop and look at things and to let my dog meander too. (And I’m super-envious of your walking everywhere life.)

I feel so much happier now I undresatnd all this. Thanks!
