    late start adventurer… 

    I feel like I’ve started everything in my life a little late than most so it only seems fitting that I’m joining in on the year of 52 adventures during week 3.  My good friend Jean Ann inspired me to join.  As soon as she told me about it I started jotting down everything I want to do and would send Jean updated lists every 5 minutes.  I haven’t been this excited about something in a long time.

    So far my list consists of some simple things like clean under my bed, watch gone with the wind, take a yoga class and visit the art institute.  Then there are the big boys such as go on an international trip, sky diving, pay off my debt…and so on.  Even though i’m getting a late start, i have managed to get 3 adventures under my belt to keep me up to speed with the rest of you.

    Poets Of Cambridge 

    My week two adventure looked something like this…. It was a dark and cool night. Two friends ventured to the green line only to be encapsulated for mere minutes until delivery to the red – taking us to an unknown land called Cambridge. Ok so it really wasn’t unknown as I had been there many times before but for nothing quite as special as this.

    Jane and I ventured out that night to support our good friend and founder of The Year of 52 Adventures, Kim, in her first ever poetry reading. Let me back up for a moment and inject that the mere fact that Jane and I made it somewhere together and didn’t get lost or have an awkward train experience in and of itself qualifies as an adventure – but that’s not the focus of this particular post. This adventure wasn’t so much about the location where it took place or transport there. However the eclectic artwork that lined the walls top to bottom and side to side, the stray cat that seemed to be endeared by everyone (well, everyone but me due to a distant memory that included a lunging cat, hissing, blood, a spray bottle, scars, and cat-scratch disease), and the over-zealous host who very well could have been elated for reasons other than being the keeper of such an evening were cause enough for sensory overload and future poetry material.       You’re right, it is a big triumph that we made it somewhere together! And I think that cat had some radar for the people who wanted to pet it (I’ll admit it: me), and went instead to the people who didn’t really care for it (like the man sleeping on the sofa.)

    Adventure for Week 2- Trip to NYC (LA to NY is an adventure in itself) but I did a run in Central Park (7 miles), spent the afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, tried Vietnamese Food at Le Colonial and had brunch at a NYC diner- all FIRSTs.

    Since my life in Korea over the past eight months has been a series of random and unexpected adventures, I thought it would be a nice twist to actually plan some adventures. The unplanned adventures I have experienced since the start of 2010 include celebrating my first New Year’s Eve/Day in a foreign country and being a guest at the home of a Korean family. Adventure #3 will be to attend a Korean wedding this weekend. I will share more details about Adventures 1,2, and 3 next post!

    Adventure #2 The Bacon Dip 

    I knew from the start that one of my adventures this year would be cooking related – since I’ve moved back to Chicago and am living on my own, I don’t do much cooking any more. Also, my friends here are a little bit older and more “adult” than my old friends in DC and I’ve been desiring some competitive adult party skills such as bringing a dessert to a party, gifting a bottle of wine that cost more than $6.99, and most importantly, having something a little flashier than a bag of chips on the coffee table when I am hosting friends.

    So I wanted to make an appetizer, but I made this adventure a little more specific—I wanted an appetizer than included everyone’s favorite food: Bacon. Oh bacon, you delicious mistress. Bacon, you glorious food item even vegetarians dream about. Bacon, like a stripper inside a birthday cake, you just make every gathering so much more enjoyable.

    You can check out the actual recipe for my dip here, but I’ll just tell you that it included bacon, garlic and blue cheese, among other delights.

      this adventurer thinks you should try sometihng vegetarian. or just make me a fancy dessert. i often use my vegetarinism to eat more desserts than i really should.

      i’m good friends with cheese and garlic. probably 2 of my favorite spices-since i don’t really like things with flavor or condiments.

    I just started the 52 Adventures. My first adventure was to go with my nephew to Fernbank Museum in Georgia. Fernback Museum is a dinosaur museum. I enjoyed spending time with my nephew at this museum. He was very informative about dinosaurs. He was my tour guide.

    Adventure #2 Join a Gym 

    Ok so this adventure wasn’t on the original list. I was kind of scrambling for a good adventure this week and I decided that joining a gym was good enough. I have been a member of a gym before but it was either the YMCA or an old big beautiful ballroom that had been turned into a gym. The ballroom gym was great. It was cozy, quiet, sometimes a little private depending on the time you went. It left me spoiled for future gym experiences. On Sunday I became a member of Xsport which is nothing like the comforts of the ballroom gym.  I feel like these mega gyms are filled with d-bags that only want my money or want me to go tanning or sign up with a personal trainer and consume mass quantities of strange vitamins. I have a gym bias, its true. All my insecurities tend to surface at the gym. Why is everyone looking at me? Can they tell I don’t belong here because I can’t maneuver this weight contraption? Are all these beefy men going to pick me up and toss me back downstairs to the safety of a treadmill? The gym kind of messes with my brain but I like working out. Making the decision to give my hard earned money to an establishment such as this was definitely an adventure. Overcoming my gym insecurities will be an even bigger one.

      I joined the gym on sunday too! the balleys on clark and diversey. Im scared of creepy dbag gym guys too, but you and i are going to be super hot AND gym experts before you know it! plus, the gym is a good place to meet that special someone…. 🙂

    Adventure #2: A date with myself 

    I went and saw “Invictus”  on Saturday all by myself.    I bought myself some popcorn and a bottle of water and settled  into my seat.  I felt a little awkward at first.  I finished half the bag of popcorn before the movie even started.  Once it did, I forgot I was solo.  I really had a great time.  I would definitely do it again!  Great date:)  Hope he calls…..

    Week 2 – My Marriage (not the act, but the thought of it) 

    I will be getting married this summer (August 7th, 2010) and I am fortunate enough that the person who will be overseeing my wedding is also one of my best friends.  I know he cares truly about the ceremony, about what is said, about how it is presented and received. So what does he do for me?  He gives me fucking homework.  BASTARD!  But in retrospect, the homework is VERY beneficial.

      This is NOT boring — it’s beautiful! What a great homework assignment. I’m tempted to try this adventure with my husband of 10 years.
